Nvidia and Google DeepMind to Power Disney’s Next-Gen Robots

19 Mar 2025 | 1 year ago | Author: Dr. Sakshi Shringi |

Nvidia, in collaboration with Google DeepMind and Disney Research, is set to revolutionize the entertainment industry with its latest advancements in AI-powered robotics. At the GTC 2025 keynote, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced a groundbreaking physics engine called Newton, which aims to enhance robotic movements and interactions in real-world environments. This collaboration seeks to bring more lifelike and engaging robotic characters to Disney theme parks, captivating audiences with a new level of realism and expression.

Disney’s ongoing research in advanced robotics has already led to the creation of highly expressive animatronics, and this partnership will further push the boundaries of what is possible. The new AI-driven Newton physics engine will serve as a crucial tool in refining robotic behavior, allowing Disney’s entertainment robots to perform complex motions with greater precision and fluidity. One of the most notable examples is the Star Wars-inspired BDX droid, which made a surprise appearance during Huang’s keynote, showcasing its advanced mobility and interactive capabilities.

Nvidia’s Newton is designed to work seamlessly with Google DeepMind’s MuJoCo physics engine, creating a synergy between machine learning and robotic simulations. This will enable Disney’s robots to adapt and respond more naturally to their environments, making interactions more immersive for park visitors. By combining Nvidia’s AI expertise with Disney’s storytelling magic, this project is expected to redefine theme park experiences worldwide.

An open-source version of the Newton engine is scheduled for release later this year, allowing researchers and developers to further explore its potential applications. This move will not only benefit Disney but also accelerate innovation in robotics across various industries.

In addition to Newton, Nvidia also introduced Groot N1, an AI foundation model specifically designed for humanoid robots. This model enhances environmental perception and reasoning, equipping robots with improved situational awareness and decision-making skills. Such advancements could pave the way for more interactive and autonomous robotic characters in Disney’s theme parks, enriching the overall guest experience.

As AI and robotics continue to evolve, collaborations like this highlight the immense potential of merging cutting-edge technology with entertainment. Disney, Nvidia, and Google DeepMind are at the forefront of this transformation, working together to create the next generation of intelligent and engaging robotic characters. With the upcoming launch of Newton and the integration of AI-driven capabilities, the future of theme park entertainment is set to become more immersive, interactive, and magical than ever before.
