Tech Ideathon 2026 Successfully Concludes, Showcasing Innovation for a Smart Mauritius

Tech Ideathon 2026, the premier innovation challenge hosted by VIT Mauritius, was successfully organized on 27–28 February 2026 at VIT Mauritius, Uniciti International Education Hub, Pierrefonds, Mauritius. Held under the banner “Igniting Ideas for a Smart Mauritius,” the event brought together student visionaries and working professionals to address global challenges with strong local relevance through 48 hours of intense ideation, collaboration, and innovation. Jointly organized by VIT Mauritius and The Institution of Engineers and Scientists (IOES), the virtual idea-presentation hackathon created a vibrant platform for technology-driven problem-solving. Open to UG, PG, and PhD students as well as working professionals, the ideathon fostered interdisciplinary participation and meaningful industry-academia collaboration.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Dr. Vijayakumar Chandrasekaran, Vice-Chancellor I/C, VIT Mauritius. A distinguished academic leader with over 30 years of experience in the internationalization of higher education and project management, he has played a pivotal role in fostering global academic partnerships, student mobility, and collaborative research initiatives. His presence and address added significant inspiration and strategic direction to the ideathon.

The competition revolved around ten high-impact themes: AI for Everyday Life, Sustainable & Green Innovation, Healthcare & Well-Being, Smart Cities & Urban Living, FinTech & Financial Inclusion, Education & Future of Learning, Social Impact & Community Empowerment, Cybersecurity & Digital Trust, AgriTech & Food Security, and Future of Work & Productivity. Reflecting its ambitious scale, the ideathon featured 10 problem statements, engaged 100 industry mentors, brought together 200 visionary students, and provided 48 hours to innovate. Participants presented their ideas online, received structured feedback from experts, and competed for awards, with several promising concepts identified for further mentoring and potential startup incubation.

A distinguished international jury panel comprising senior leaders, technologists, researchers, and academicians evaluated the submissions. The keynote address was delivered by Sathwik Rao Sirikonda, Site Reliability Engineer at Bytedance, who shared insights on scalable systems, reliability engineering, and global digital platforms. With strong global industry participation and a clear focus on societal impact, Tech Ideathon 2026 concluded as a significant platform for emerging innovators, successfully transforming bold ideas into actionable pathways toward building a smarter and more sustainable Mauritius.
